I have a lot more to say on this, but since you brought him up I’d also like to add Gary Steven recently recounted a public spanking given to his little sister at a restaurant when he was 11 and she was 6.

“She grabbed her and put her over her knee, then she pulled her pants down and gave her ten or twelve hard, fast slaps on the bare bottom right there at the table. Other than the sounds of the spanking and my sister crying, the restaurant went silent. Everybody was staring at us. Then she sat Karen down and said. "You sit there, eat and behave yourself or I'll give you something else to cry about." I have to admit, I was eleven at the time and was pretty embarrassed looking around and seeing people staring at us or quietly talking amongst themselves, while casting glances our way. Mom asked me, "What's wrong?" I said, "Mom, everybody's staring at us." She looked around the room and just said, "Let em' stare, ignore them and go ahead and eat." I got a few public spankings like that when I was younger and was glad it didn't happen to me that day. At eleven I was still getting spanked at home, I wasn't about to try my luck in public.”

Gary noticed the people looking at them and his mom was A-ok with the attention. The biggest fear on his 11 year old mind was the possibility of him being spanked the same way. Having witnessed his 11 year old brother and 13 year old cousin get a public bare bottom spanking after receiving one himself when he was 8, i’m sure there was no doubt on his mind that he would be eligible for the same fate. I think your on to something about it happening to a big kid versus a little kid as well. Had it been Gary on the receiving end of the punishment, the shame he would experience would no doubt be much more intense than what his six-year-old sister experienced. The deterrent influencing him to behave was indeed embarrassment much more than potential pain. It’s almost like it was an invisible implement to make spankings more “painful” in a way bigger kids who have developed modesty would experience, or the way you put it: increasing the “potency” of the spanking.

I have much to say on my own experience, but I just wanted to point out that you’re making valid points whether or not the style of spanking is valid as punishment.
