I had some good teachers and some not so good. Some teachers were like having a second mother, and Mrs. Greenwell was one of those teachers. Her hugging me and sitting down and talking with me, was proof to me anyway that she really loved her students just like they were her own children. I count myself as very lucky to have had teachers like that in first, second and third grade. To me that was the best time to have a nurturing teacher like they all three were.

I would find out later, much later that Mom did know that Mrs. Greenwell called her and told her about the spanking, but she asked mom to give me a chance to tell her myself instead of confronting me about it and spanking me for getting in trouble. So when she asked how school was, which was a normal question from her. I spoke up and told her I got spanked and why. So while she decided to give me a "spanking" which like I said, didn't really hurt. It stung a little and that was it. It was nowhere near as bad as it would have been if I had tried to hide the truth. Then when she hugged me and told me how proud she was of me for speaking up that made me feel really good about the "Punishment" I got and about myself.

The Doghouse I'm referring to is a novelty plaque that came out in the 1950s and 60s. You could find them in novelty shops and some mail order catalogues. It had a picture or 3d doghouse on it with a brass hook in the doorway. Then to either the right or left depending on the style had four to five more hooks with little wooden dogs hanging on them and each dog had a place where you could write in the name of a family member. It also had the words, "Look who's in the DOGHOUSE." At the top of the plaque. Whenever someone was in trouble or you got mad or whatever, you could take them off their regular hook and hang them in the doghouse. Mom bought ours at Lincoln's Birthplace in Hodgenville Ky literally the same day she bought the "Cute Little Deer with a Bear Behind" Paddle. She had dad hang the Doghouse up in the on the wall in the kitchen between the door and the stove. Then had him hang the paddle right under it. At first, it wasn't a joke, Mom would sometimes hang one of us in the doghouse to warn us we had a spanking coming. But once we got into it and started putting them, especially Mom in the doghouse, It became a game instead of a warning of an upcoming spanking.
