I have enjoyed reading your recollections of your kindergarten teachers.

I don’t remember much of my time in kindergarten or my teacher, Mrs. Freeman. I do know that as a younger child I was apparently very poorly behaved and prone to tantrums, biting, hitting, that sort of thing. My parents credited Mrs. Freeman’s softer approach, as opposed to just immediately resorting to punishment, for a dramatic improvement in my behavior.

Mrs. Freeman wrote letters to her students for many years after I left kindergarten, but eventually we lost touch. Fast forward to just a few years ago, Mrs. Freeman recognized my mother in the grocery store and we all arranged to have lunch together. Even today, whenever I visit home I make it a point to try and schedule lunch or dinner with Mrs. Freeman. She has enlisted my help with tracking down former students on social media so she can reconnect with them.

The biggest surprise for me after all those years was Mrs. Freeman’s age. I thought she was old when I was in her class, turns out she was in her late 20s!
