When I was a boy decades ago, from ages 12-14 (junior high school years) were the high point for most time spent sprawled over adult knees having my bare bottom tanned. It wasn’t because I was more naughty than my younger years — quite the opposite. But in those younger years, the combination of my tow head, blue eyes, baby face, expressions of contrition and tears often managed to get me a pass (especially from my mom) or at least a milder spanking than my behavior warranted.
That changed in my junior high years. My desire for independence mixed with testosterone fueled “macho” toughness led me to almost weekly sessions over laps. To make matters worse, the spankings during that period often were much more severe than earlier (the wooden spoon and hairbrush often complementing the hand), largely due to my stubborn determination to withhold tears and any expression of regret for my behavior.
Was I unusual in this or did others experience an uptick in both number and severity of spankings as a tween and young teen?
