In the case of my dad, I think his motivation for spanking bare bottom was purely to increase the pain. He always spanked bare bottom when he used his hand. When he started using his belt, it was usually not bare bottom. I guess with the added pain of a belt, he thought being bare was no longer necessary. He did use his belt on the bare two times that I can remember, which I guess would be considered the be all end all of punishments.

My mom was a little more complex. I don’t think she spanked bare to increase the embarrassment per se, but I get the impression she did it as a way to humble me and assert her authority. When I was a young kid, she would do the baring herself, slowly and one layer at a time. As I grew older she would have me do it. The whole ritual behind it leads me to believe there were motives other than just making a spanking hurt more.
