As a kid, I thought spanking equated to strictness, and yes, I thought my parents were strict.

As an adult now, for a long time, and thinking back, I don't consider my parents were strict at all. They had reasonable rules and expectations. When those expectations were not met, they usually had progressive punishment/discipline practices, ranging from a talking to/scolding, to grounding or other temporary restrictions. However, when all else failed, or when a behavior was repeated, or seriously crossed a line, they were firm believers in spanking. In comparison to some stories here, or even stories shared by other boys my age at the time, I don't think the way my parents (almost always my dad, often following moms prescription) gave spankings was severe. In fact, I probably got spankings on the moderate side of what many claimed.

When needed though, I would say they spanked with determination, with little regard for making my butt sting unbearably, or for the howls I made in response. And once I was howling, and absolutely desperate for the spanking to end, it continued for just a bit more. I wasn't always spanked on my bare butt, though after age nine I was. My dad made a wood paddle that was used almost exclusively after I was eight or so. The reason for both of those was quite obviously to ensure the sting described above, and to ensure a good memorable disciplinary message was driven home.

So, whether that's strict is up for interpretation. For the times (late 1970s and early 1980s) when I was in my prime, pre-teen spanking years, I think it was probably no more nor no less than what was needed at the time.
