I should add something. Based mostly on what other kids said, or overhearing adults speak casually on the topic, spanking was still relatively common, and not widely frowned upon up into the early to mid 1980s. As a result, I didn't think much about it after my spankings ended around thetime I was in 7th grade. That was when I turned 13 and my own childhood spankings ended.

However, I can cite one thing that sparked my lifelong interest in the topic. That was a series of fascinating, and somewhat intimate discussions I had with a young woman I was dating in the mid 90s. She was 21-22 at the time, when I was 24-25. The topic came up naturally, as we were flirting with discussions of marriage.

What was most fascinating wasn't learning that my girlfriend was raised by parents who were firm believers in spanking. But hearing a perspective on spanking from a "girl" was new. Again, spanking for someone in my age class when we were kids seemed common. What was also fascinating, as we exchanged thoughts, and vivid memories of our spankings (this was happening about ten to twelve years after we both got our last ones) was how similar it was practiced by our parents. The boys I knew growing up all described very different spanking practices and tools used by their parents. Many described fairly severe sounding spankings. That was not the case with my girlfriend. We shared and I believe honestly) almost every memory we had on the topic. There were a few differences, but her parents sounded like firm believers in sound spankings, even with a small paddle like my dad had. But her parents did not at all seem like abusive users of spanking. She also was the first person I recall using the terms "memorable," and "sting" to describe the sensation of a spanking.

Besides leading to some intimate talk, knowing we grew up in adjacent towns, just a few miles apart, and were spanked so similarly was for some reason very interesting to me.
