Well Sweetie, With my parents there were basically two levels of spankings.

First was the "Attention Getter" which was usually one or two swats over whatever we happened to be wearing at the time. It was usually a warning smack or two to get our attention and let us know straighten up or you'll get a real spanking.

Then there were the real spankings. Always bare bottom, either by hand or hairbrush from Momma or by hand from Daddy. They didn't always use the word "spanking" sometimes It would be a threat to bust or beat our butts or bare butts . A typical spanking from daddy was from ten to fifteen smacks, Momma didn't give a set number of smacks. There were a couple of times say if I lied about something and got caught, she would spank me first by hand and then hairbrush. There were a couple of times I got spanked first by Momma and then Daddy would also give me a spanking.

There was another level but it never happened to any of us. There were times Daddy threatened to take off his belt and whip our butts. While he did spank us on occasion he was too tender hearted to actually whip us with a belt. Also, Because of her own childhood getting beatings with a switch or belt, There's no way Momma would have allowed for us to get whipped.

When Aunt Connie spanked one (or more) of us with a flyswatter, she referred to that as a "Whoopin." The only time I ever was threatened with a "paddling" was at school. In those cases I got anywhere from two to five licks. All over clothing but there were a couple of times I got hit on bare skin because what I was wearing was riding up.
