One woman I corresponded with said that when she was growing up, her parents had two levels of spanking (father) or three levels of spankings (mother).

Her first level, and the kind she mostly received, were called "spankings," and were given with her parent's open hand on her bare bottom by her mother, or on her panties by her father.

Her mother had a second level called a "paddling." That meant given with a hairbrush.

Her worst punishments were called "whippings" and were given with her father's belt or her mother's flexible switch fresh cut from their garden.

This got me thinking about my own upbringing. My mother had three levels. Her first was a swat or three over your clothing, usually with you standing up. I didn't think of these as "spankings" when I was little. They didn't have a name and were nonverbal warnings that I was close to earning myself a real spanking if I didn't behave.

Her second level were "spankings," given with you over her lap or knee with her open hand on your bare bottom. Most of mine and my sister's were of this sort.

She believed she had a third level, which she referred to as "severe," as in, "when we get home young lady you'll be spanked severely." I say "believed" because spankings emotionally upset me so much that I couldn't distinguish her regular spankings from her "severe" ones. They all seemed horrible to me. But judging by her chastisements of my younger sister, "severe" meant she went on longer and really tried to make your bottom hurt extra urgently because you had been extra bad.

How about anyone else? Did your parents have different levels of spankings or just one?
