Need to answer this in two parts. Firstly spankings by hand as a younger kid, and then when implements were used in older tween/teen years.

As a younger kid in primary school (elementary school equivalent in Australia) there were the quick 1 or 2 swats on the spot to basically get my attention to stop what i was doing.
If the quick swat didnt work or my conduct was more serious then Dad would usually get involved. These spankings were a lot harder and longer and unlike a short, sharp reminder, they were done to hurt.

In my tween/teen years hand spankings were replaced with a wooden yardstick, smacking us 3 boys this way was solely Dad's domain.

The method for yardstick spankings didnt change, except for the length. For the more minor offences, i might get away with 5 swats. But if it was viewed at the top level of severity Dad had no issues with giving out a mighty long spanking session. Reckon the worst i got was about 20. My middle brother once got an awful school report and his punishment for that was more like 30!
