At the baseline my parents either spanked you just pants down or bare bottom over the knee by hand until 13. After 13 you got the cane standing up. Bare bottom spanking was for serious misbehavior, in particular lying and disobedience, or repeated misbehavior which you’d already gotten a pants down spanking for. The major variable was whether or not this was done privately or in front of witnesses. Most often my kid sister was the one who witnessed me getting spanked but it happened in front of cousins as well, and a couple times in front of close family friends. My family was not shy about spanking and nobody was safe from getting it bare bottom in front of other kids until age 15, at least I never saw anyone get spanked past that age even over underwear although I assume it still happened regularly enough.
