While it was not mentioned in such specific terms, there was no doubt that the by and large the adults who spanked me, my siblings, my cousins, my friends, were aware that exposure was a factor that made the punishment more effective and more memorable. Again, this was rural Kansas in the 70s and 80s, much different than now.

As we got older, particularly in that 12-15 age range where spankings were most frequent, the protests that were made about what the witnesses were about to see were usually answered with something to the effect of “you don’t have anything that they haven’t seen before.”

One instance, I was around 9 or 10, my oldest sister, who was 15 at the time and in high school, had been sexually harassed by a boy in her class. I don’t remember what it was but the boy got in trouble for it at school and that always meant a call home. The boy came over to our house with his dad to make a face to face apology to my sister.

That went well but then the boy then ordered to drop his drawers, underwear included, and with his hands on his head, his front facing my sister who was seated on the couch (next to our mom) his dad took off his belt and proceeded to whip that boys bottom raw. Clearly, I don’t need to get into graphic detail, but my sister got quite the eye full. To this day I can remember the look on her face as that was occurring.
