A few people were talking about babysitters, and spankings, back in the day. Now over the years I have found that many boys, circa 1940 until later 80's, often had sitters, and too an older age than the girls did. And as often was often the case, had strict sitters. Here is a brief memory of one such boy.

Steve was one of my best friends and at the time was already in high school, a fifteen-year-old sophomore, yet if his parents were going out for the evening, he had a babysitter. He tried to laugh off being watched by stating that she was a college woman (as if she was coming over to get closer to him.) Now, that was true. She was in college; however, she was just a freshman. So only three to four years older than him. But what I vividly remember was being over for supper one night when she unexpectedly showed up. Seems his parents were going out and forgot to tell him as no way, if he could help it, I am there when his "babysitter" shows up. Long story made short, he was being a little too mouthy, as if posturing for me - I think he was nervous - when his mom suddenly spoke up and in this stern voice said, " Young man. I want to remind you that tonight you are going to bed when Deena says bedtime, and not when you want!" Talk about turning red. He sure did. If not to bright neon he next turned when his father spoke up by harshly stating, "And if you give her any problem, I expect to hear that your bottom was bared, and that you were soundly spanked. Is that understood?" And what I will never forget is how humbly he replied, "Yes sir." Or his father's half exasperated voice when he finished by saying, "Well, it won't be first time she has had to spank you. Now is it!" Steve was so embarrassed all he could do was stare at floor and nod his head in sad agreement.

But what I will remember to my death bed is how, after his parents left, Deena reminded him who was boss. First by running her hand through Steve's hair, tugging on it while gently telling him, "I need you to be a good boy for me tonight. I am tired." Before looking him in the eye and with a knowing smile said, "And you are nothing if not a lap full when being spanked." Steve, he didn't really answer, but the half-strangled sound he made, well, it said all. Now I didn't stay much longer, but I do know it was only like eight, so early, but not so early that as I was getting ready to walk to the door, Deena turned to Steve and said, "Time for your bath ... as you are being laid down at nine tonight." My eyes, they had to have gone wide, as I was trying to digest the words, bath, and nine, for a classmate. Deena, however, she just gave me a sly, crooked grin. Then closed the door after me.
