There was a teacher in school who gave her own swats who had a fearsome reputation and deserved it. She was also the girls tennis coach. You felt hers for a good hour or two after and also when you sat down the next day. She definitely left some bruises. I don't know how she got away with it but she never gave less than seven which was considerably more then you generally got in the office. I think the maximum in the office was six. Otherwise, the effects of the paddle at school generally faded within an hour. At home, it depended on what was used and what you had done. After hiding the spanking belt, I got switched and discovered that there were things in the world worse than the belt. Those welts lasted for a few days. The belt definitely let you up for a good 30 minutes. Mom would make you stand with your hands on your head facing the wall which really made you focus on how bad your rump felt. Some were worse than others. I got paddled by my best friend's mom once and I remember those bruises lasted quite a long time.
