I would definitely agree that you were spanked not beaten.

What's the difference? To my mind there are a few things.

A beating is designed to provide a severe punishment without regard to the individual being punished, their reaction or subsequent damage such as significant bruising and/or lacerations.

A spanking is designed to provide a mild to moderate punishment with the welfare of the recipient kept in mind and their response to the pain. The pain inflicted, while it should be very unpleasant, it also should be transitory and do no significant harm.

A beating might to uncontrolled and bred of anger.

A spanking is controlled, purposeful and designed to punish and correct but is not abusive.

A beating is given with the sole purpose of significant punishment by someone who may not care for the recipient or who at the moment has lost conscious, rational awareness of their care for the recipient.

A spanking is given with the purpose of providing an unpleasant experience through mild to moderate pain for misbehavior with the intent to punish but also correct by a person cares for the welfare of the recipient.
