I was lucky that at primary school and intermediate they didn't give official detentions - you just stayed in at lunchtime and copied from the dictionary or wrote out your multiplication times tables. These weren't reported home.

In Year 8 we had a student diary that we wrote notes home. Once I was one of many students that had completed our homework. We had to write something along the lines of 'Last night I was unable to find 20 minutes to complete my homework, needless to say my teacher is very disappointed in me'. My Mum wrote 'So am I' and signed my diary. Not before she smacked my bottom.

I was no longer getting smacked in high school and I never got an issued detention - other than an unofficial group class detention and once were all the boys in the school were paraded single file through the school following vandalism in the boys bathroom.
