I don't think it would have occurred to me to not walk next door. I'm pretty sure my mom stood outside and watched me walk next door. I dreaded spankings, but I think I generally knew that things went better if I cooperated to get it done with.

Spankings from my grandma were painful, though I don't think a brushing from her was necessarily more painful than my dad's belt. It was much more emotionally draining with a looping lecture that went on and on. Like if I was in trouble with my dad, rarely did five minutes go by from the punishment being announced to the whole ordeal being over. If my grandma spanked me, the same amount of pain might be stretched into half an hour of starting and stopping with lecturing sprinkled in.
