I'm pretty sure my dad grew up getting his dad's belt in a similar manner to what he gave us. I know the kinds of spankings my mom (and my two uncles and aunt) grew up with because my grandma thought nothing of treating a grandchild like she did her own kids and wear us out with the brush.

I know my grandma grew up in a very conservative area of Mexico and attended a Catholic boarding school with nuns where they punished kids left and right with rulers and paddles. One time I was at her house after school and having to write sentences because I got in trouble with my teacher. She told me that if she was punished with writing lines at her school in the 1920s or 30s, this mean nun would spank her hands really hard to make it hurt the whole time she was writing.
