She's a full decade older than I am and we have never been super social with each other. When I learned about this I was probably 14 and she was probably 24.

I remember when I tried out for volleyball in 9th grade, my cousin Elena asked if her old coach was still there. She told me to be careful because the coach would paddle me without any warning. She said a couple of her teachers went to the coach about her grades slipping and the coach called her into her office in the back of the locker room. Then the shades went down which was apparently the sign of a paddling. She didn't tell me how many swats but she said it really hurt in workout clothes and she had to sign the paddle.

I thought it was a cool story, but again, the days of the coaches being able to paddle students predated my high school experience. I was already wary of other kids thinking I was weird if I asked too many details about spankings so I didn't ask much more.
