I'm giving away my age here, but when I was growing up, our flyswatter was all metal. Picture something like coat hanger metal made into a long handle and framed into a square at the other end, with metal window screen material fitted inside the square.

NO ONE got spanked with a flyswatter that I knew of when I was growing up. It would have been much like spanking your child with a wire hanger like Joan Crawford.
