In our house the rule was you ate what was made for dinner, or you went hungry. Fortunately. my mother was an excellent cook, and there were only a couple of things I wouldn't eat, both with good reason. I am allergic to watermelon. even just the juice from it in a fruit salad is enough to make the inside of my mouth, then my esophagus right down to my stomach start itching BADLY. This is followed by projectile vomiting. Needless to say, I was not served watermelon once that happened. The only other thing I just can't stand is liver. My father loved it, so my mom would make him liver and onions. Liver does something weird to the inside of my mouth. It feels like I have a mouth full of feathers. I just can't stand it. My mother understood because she had the same reaction. When she made liver and onions for my father, she would make old fashioned macaroni and cheese pie as one of the sides, along with a vegetable, and we would just have that, and leave the liver for my father.

As I said, my mother was an excellent cook, and so was her mother. I learned to cook from watching them, and talking about cooking with my mother, as well as watching cooking shows on TV back in the day, starting with Julia Child. When I was grown and had a family of my own, I shared the cooking tasks with my wife, who admitted I was the better cook. The same rules applied with our boys. Three of them have the same problem with watermelon I have, one does not; but, because only he and my wife could eat it, they only ate it when it is served at a picnic held by someone else. I am old now, my wife died years ago, a little over 3 years after our youngest son was born. I do all the cooking now for myself, my best friend who lives here on the farm with me, and my next youngest son, who never married, and lives with us. He is becoming a pretty good cook too.
