Subject: Libertarian of the Century

Who is the leading libertarian of the 20th century? Below are the 5 names that dominated the list of the distinguished editors of the Liberty magazine before they cast their final votes:

Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning free market economist

Friedrich A. Hayek, Nobel Prize-winning economist and philosopher

Ludwig von Mises, economist and uncompromising advocate of liberty

Ayn Rand, fiction writer, founder of Objectivism philosophy

Murray Rothbard, economist, historian, philosopher, journalist, political strategist, movement activist

Who was the winner (by just one vote)?:

Ludwig von Mises.

I think that's acceptable.

I have as much respect for Harry Browne as a supplier of practical libertarian thought from a contemporary libertarian. Von Mises, I believe, was his major mentor.

But I still think Ayn Rand has had more influence on the libertarian movement than anyone else (even though she didn't consider herself a libertarian).

What think you?
