Although technically a social elite is more likely to have the means of education (St. Paul's, essentially) in order to get into Cambridge. So technically there is a correlation there. They may be different, but clearly you can't see them as entirely unconnected. That's why the Royal Family can go to whichever university or school they want... because of their social status. Social status can have an effect. I'm not saying that you're at Cambridge because of your social or financial position. I can understand that that suggestion would be offensive. But what I'm saying is that if you have social status, then you have more chance to get good education, good text books, personal tutors... whatever. Anyway, not being part of the intellectual elite then I confuse the two very easily, so I'm so sorry for making the mistake which was only intended as a joke in the first place. But to make up for it... "You're at Cambridge, so I bow down to your superior intelligence. Now I'll just crawl back under the stone that I came from." But please please, for my own sanity, don't patronise me. This sort of spill of emotion can be the effect. Have fun (discussing Descartes or finding the cure for cancer or whatever it is that the most intelligent people in the world do!)
