Breaker looked incredulous. “Otters? Why would otters take in a vermin?”
Kib shrugged. “I dunno. I’m lucky they did, though … I was told that they found me starving and alone in the forest fringe further south. They were unable to just allow me to die, so they tried to raise me to be a gentlebeast.” The ferret grinned. “There have been tales of other ferrets who were evil even when raised by a whole Abbeyful of good mice, so you can bet that they were still nervous. Apparently they did well, since I’ve never felt the slightest inclination to steal, hurt, or kill another creature.”
Rockspar had his doubts, but as he glanced at Brokerudder, the white otter nodded. Kib was still being truthful.
Salpik rested his harpoon butt on the dusty floor. “All right, Kib mate. Yore not a vermin. What should we do with ye?”
Rockspar answered quickly. “Give ‘im rations and send ‘im on ‘is way.”
Breaker agreed. “Aye, but he can ‘ave a guard to make sure he leaves our territory safely.”
Kib looked horrified. “Please don’t send me away, mates! There are whole bands of vermin who try to recruit any vermin species they find roamin’ around. If I refuse to serve them, they could kill me. I’ve lived with otters before; can I stay here with your lot?”
Salpik nodded. “I see. We can’t very well send you off into the jaws of death. You can stay here, mate…but be sure that we’ll be keeping an eye on you until we’re absolutely certain that you are trustworthy. Nobeast has ever fooled Brokerudder, but there could always be a first time.”
Kib bowed low. “Thank you, Skipper. I understand, and I’ll do my best to prove myself.”
Rockspar grunted quietly. “I’ll go calm the otterwives, then,” he mumbled tersely.
“Breaker, can you help me find quarters for this ferret?” Salpik queried.
“Aye, Skip. D’you also want me to find somebeast to act as a guard until we can trust Kib?”
Salpik threw his paw around the ferret’s shoulder. “Nah…I can do that. I’m interested in hearing more about this fellow’s past. You go search about. I think there’s some empty quarters next to mine.”
“Aye,” repeated Breaker as he left.
“You’ll have to excuse Rockspar,” Salpik told Kib as they left Brokerudder’s room and walked toward the holt entrance. “His wife was killed by a pair of ferrets a few seasons back, leaving him to raise his son alone. That’s why he’s being a bit cold about the idea that I’m letting you stay.”
Kib smiled as they re-entered the sunlit beach. “I’ll steer clear of him until he can trust me, then.”
