Chapter 7 “Not Dead!”

Akisran came to consciousness, but did not open her eyes. She felt a searing pain through her chest, but did not make a move, for she heard the hare and badger still in the room. As soon as they left, the ferret opened her eyes. She saw an arrow sticking out of her chest and nearly screamed. She tugged it painfully out, crimson blood seeping from between her lips. How long had she been out? She took a piece of parchment from the badgers scroll and pressed it over her wound to stop the bleeding. She realized then with horror what was soaking up her blood. She had taken it out of the badgers scroll! She knew that if he found a page missing, he would kill her. She tore a piece of bed-sheet off of her mat and replaced his page carefully. She wrapped the bandage around her chest and looked for a way to escape. She finally found it. Right outside, there was a small stained glass window. She dove through it, and landed in the sand outside. She coughed up a lungful of blood as she sat in agony on the hot sand. She cursed lightly under her breath and staggered her way to the shore. Akisran cupped her claws and bathed her chest in salt water. The searing pain did not stop her, however from walking in tremendous pain towards a small boat used for fishing. It was simply docked, tied only by a rope. The ferret but the rope savagely until it severed, and set sail in the boat.

Chapter 8 “Dreams or Nightmares?”

Dreamfur tossed and turned in her clean bed at Redwall. She was dreaming about that dread day that she was fighting with Bonifa. First she would be in the fighting ring with the older ferret, then she would be in front of Akisran, listening to her cries of, “Murderer! Murderer! Murderer!” She woke with a start, breathing heavily. She could not stay in this place any longer! She had gotten no sleep since her arrival there, and she must leave. She packed her few possessions and set off to the Abbey Gates. As she was unlocking them, a tiny shadow appeared beside her. The squirrel jumped in alarm and crouched into a fighting stance. A small giggle escaped from the shadows. Dreamfur, taken aback, peered closer and yelped in pain as the something bit her on the nose. The shadow emerged from the darkness, revealing the small form of Freeda, the mousebabe. The little maid was in tucks of laughter while Dreamfur sat back on her haunches and rubbed her nose. “Why’d you do that?” The squirrel asked in a whisper. Freeda stopped giggling long enough to reply. “You’s leened too cwose so I’s BITED you’s wif my big, shawp TEEFS!” She explained quietly. Dreamfur blinked. Freeda went on. “Why’s you’s leevin’?” She asked. Dreamfur struggled for an answer. “I’s…I mean, I’m leaving because I can’t sleep. Go back to bed, little one.” Freeda shook her head in disapproval. “Why’s do you’s tink ME’S out hewe? I’s can’t sweep eevah! I’s goin’ wif you.” And with that, the mousemaid hopped onto Dreamfur’s back. The squirrel at first was hesitant, but decided that she couldn’t hurt anything, so together they set off to find a new place to live.
