Ah hah, serious debate...I love it!

Of course, our modern society has become particularly interested in the issues concerning the specific definitions of what life is and when it begins as the legal statues concerning our legal freedoms have been expanded (of course,I am referring to Roe v. Wade).

However, I think the debate is much older than that, much older than even the lovely Descartes that Medeis quoted. Plato's cave metaphor attempted to explain the rational mind and free will in ancient times. I'm sure neolithic man, in his limited faculties, wondered what made life life, when he wasn't busy hunting and gathering of course.

What is the limit between life and non-existence? Are we cognizant in the womb, as many medical professionals believe? Do we cease when our physical manifestation ceases? Personally, I hope not.

Medeis...if consciousness is merely a manifestation of the material/physical, then why do certain living creatures show no signs of higher consciousness (had any interesting conversations with ameba, or protezoa, lately? Slimey guys in bars don't count!)

I believe the orginization of consciousness...rational consciousness...belies something greater and universal. Call me old-fashioned if you must.

Still, isn't a purely Darwinian world rather cold and without magic? It surely negates mythology (okay, a whole other issue)
