 Do you think it is an instinct dating back to neanderthal times when the same creatures had to stick together to survive at all, and doing things outside of the 'herd' would probably be fatal ie: different hunting technique, etc. Also, back then, they hadnt seen the invention of everyday clothing and things, so they pretty much wore, and hunted with the same things - simply because that this was all that was available to them. Maybe we have got used to that...like, it is in our instinct (like mans instinct has been moulded to accept that you must be the same as everyone else to survive. Maybe it is this that scares people today if they dont conform, because they have this sense of 'not going to survive' (they would really, its just an instinct that has been drilled into mans head since neanderthal times or something! well, my theory anyway!)
