What "the ancients" knew and what people, scientists, etc. today think they knew is worlds apart.

The Bhagavatam is a purana. The puranas were highly simplified writings for the common folk to explain to them a little bit of the vast knowledge contained in the Vedas. Readers Digest of the times.

The Vedic Rishis (1) didn't reveal everything they knew in the Vedas, that's impossible, and (2) couched what they did reveal in highly symbolic and codified language. See some of Sri Aurobindo's writings, expecially The Secret of the Veda for a primer on this.

While our modern scientists have given us a lot of "Wow" factor, they still can be pretty closed-minded and arrogant when it suits them. Most still believe in the myth of "The Aryan Invasion", which has had 100-mile wide holes punched through it, and they still cling to such idiocies. They scoff at someone who believes in aliens or UFOs for instance, but cling tenaciously to absurdities not only like this myth of the Aryan Invasion (some think they're smart because they call it The Aryan "Migration" and think that the highly evolved Vedic culture descended from a bunch of barbaric brutes who came down from what is present day Afghanistan) but many, many other highly unscientific theories and beliefs.

It seems that scientists pick and choose what they want to believe in, just like everybody else.
