Subject: Whether meditative “visions” are alternate “perceptions”

Percepts of the usual sense modalities (vision, hearing, smell, touch, taste) are generally verifiable each the one by the others: for instance, if I see a tree but doubt the accuracy of that visual report, I can approach the tree, touch it, smell its bark, taste its sap, listen to its leaves rustle. But “visions” of the sort you are talking about are not verifiable in this way – much like the objects of dreaming experience, e.g.. But then the question to be answered (or at least asked) is: Why suppose that meditative visions are ontologically different from dreams? (If dreams do not of themselves verify the existence of their contents, it’s hard to see that visions do.)
