Howdy Kathy;

PFC Joseph Vincent Stack's Army Serial Number is RA 18864713 (which means that he enlisted) and his MOS was 11B10 (Light Weapons Infantryman). He was born on 7/20/48 and his hometown of record is Balwin Park, CA. He probably went through the L.A. Induction Center and Basic and Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Ord, but I'm not certain of that. His tour of duty in Vietnam commenced on 10/29/68 and he was assigned to B Company, 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. He was KIA on 11/25/68 in Dinh Tuong Province due to "Hostile, Ground Casualty, Other Explosive Device". PFC Stack's religious preference was Roman Catholic, he was single, and his body was recovered.

Well, let's see what we can get from that. It took about 10 days for a replacement to get from the 90th Replacement at Long Binh to his assigned company in the field due to all the processing involved so PFC Stack couldn't have been with his company for more than three weeks and it is unlikely than anybody except for his fellow platoon members will remember him by name. "Other explosive device" means a booby trap so the incident must have occured out in the field someplace and not at a base camp.

At that time, the 3rd/39th was assigned to the 3rd Brigade ("Go Devils") of the 9th Infantry Division which was primarily responsible for Long An Province, but elements of the brigade went elsewhere as well including Dinh Tuong Province where the 9th I.D. had its headquarters at Dong Tam on the northern bank of the Song My Tho. The 3rd/39th had been stationed at Rach Kien, French Fort, and Fire Support Base Moore, but the first two are in Long An Province whereas FSB Moore is in Dinh Tuong Province about half-way between Cai Lay (Khiem Ich) and My Tho just north of Hwy 4 (QL-4). See http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/mapnc4807.html especially the 2nd & 3rd maps from the left on the top row and the 2nd from left on the bottom row.

Your best bet to try to get in touch with someone who knew PFC Stack would be to leave a message in the guestbook at http://coredawg.tripod.com/ . You also might like to check out http://www.gingerb.com/vietnam.htm which has tons of photographs and information about the 9th I.D. in the Delta and http://www.mrfa.org/ which is the website of the Mobile Riverine Force Association. Good luck!
