Howdy John;

PFC Richard Lee Matthews' Marine Corps Serial Number is 2363128 and his component was regular (which means that he enlisted) and his MOS was 0311 (Rifleman). He was born on 8/8/49 and his hometown of record is Portland, ME. His tour of duty in Vietnam commenced on 8/9/68 and he was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was KIA on 11/21/68 in Quang Nam Province due to "Hostile, Ground Casualty, Gun, Small-Arms Fire". PFC Matthews' religious preference was Protestant, he was single, and his body was recovered.

Quang Nam Province is in I Corps where Da Nang is (see the maps at http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/mapnd4901.html ), but I can't find out anything more specific on the location of the incident except to say that it probably happened out in the field someplace. The only homepage for the 2nd/7th Marines that I can find is at http://unitpages.military.com/unitpages/unit.do?id=500032 which has 633 former members from all eras on their roster and where you could leave a message to try to get in touch with someone who knew PFC Matthews in Vietnam. Good luck!
