Howdy Rebecca;

I notice that you have posted tributes to your brother, PFC Wilbur Jerry Siegrist, on both the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall and the Virtual Wall so that you are already aware of most of the information that is available to the general public. The only things that I can add are PFC Siegrist's Army Serial Number (US 52860348) which means that he was drafted and his MOS was 11B10 (Light Weapons Infantryman).

The only homepage for the 1st/5th Cav. that I can find is at http://unitpages.military.com/unitpages/unit.do?id=101325 which has 96 members on their roster, but only 2 of them had dates of service which overlap those of your brother. The websites for the 5th Cavalry Regiment as a whole are equally scanty so you will have to jump up to the division level (the 1st Cavalry Division) which reduces your chances of finding anybody who knew PFC Siegrist immensely.

Since PFC Siegrist arrived in Vietnam on 12/7/68 and was KIA on 1/9/69, it is not likely that very many people except those in his platoon would have remembered him. Normally, it took about two weeks to get from the 90th Replacement Battalion at Long Binh to one's assigned company in the field. Strangely enough, I arrived in Vietnam on 12/8/68 at the 90th Replacement and may have crossed paths with your brother for a few days, but I can't remember any names from that period. I didn't actually arrive at my company (B/2nd/47th/9th Inf. Div.) until Christmas Day, 1968.
