OK guys - the instant coffee has lost it's appeal and I need.... -- Diane, 17:46:21 05/28/01 Mon (203.110.18.48)
..some advice please. Right about now having the coffee pot going all day and grabing a hot cup of coffee any old time sounds pretty appealing to me - it's da** cold here! :( My hands are freezing, my fingers are stumbling across the keyboard ....brrrrrr. I'm not a huge coffee drinker and normally settle for instant for the cup or two I may have a day so I want to know what everyone elses favorite brew is. I note (cause I love the smell of them so I do notice) that we have a good selection of beans and also ready mix brews avaliable all over down here now. So - what are the good ones or good beans to buy and/or blend? I like reasonably strong coffee but since it's for day time drinking I don't think the spoon should be able to stand up in the cup by itself, LOL. So ....help please!!

I know it's been done over and over and over BUT remember I'm from a different place altogether and it takes a while to fix these things in my head *grin*.

Where is everyone from AND ~ hey let's put a brand new slant on things ....hmmm...let's see???

What would you pick as people generally relating to where you come from (me - sheep, OMG ...is that bad or what LOL?!)

What are you most proud of about where you live?

Where else would you live if you could (IE: dream location?). ......and why??? ;-)

Diane from New Zealand - land of sheep, proud of our scenery and entrepreneurial attitude to many things, who would move to Florida for at least half the year at the drop of a hat *VBG* but, ideally, would like to spend some time all over. :) (Utopia has NO quarantine after all. ;-)

...tips and ideas of how to reduce the cost of our electricity bills. I know Marlene has some good ones :) given all the fiasco going on there over gas and electricity right now. I think it's something that all of us would like to do though. I know ours is pretty high for where we are but with all this rain it has stayed warmer than normal for May here so that's helped. (It does NOT help however when I discover the my DH has loaded a total of 3 garmets in my seldom used clothes dryer and turned it on for a full cycle :( ...men!). My (now passed on) MIL taught me that if you were going to turn the oven on use it wisely! Last night I cooked a raost chicken and baked veg and threw in some afghans (cookies?) as well. So - ok ...today there are hardly any left *VBG* & ;-) but the point is that it got used economically right? She would be proud of me. :) (My hips are telling me something altogether else though!).

Any other ideas or things you do to save on the never ending cost of energy?

Really hardy roses for people who live in extreme climates. -- Diane, 16:16:32 05/17/01 Thu (203.110.18.140)
A thought for those of you who love roses but live in very extreme climates. Rugosa Roses Very hardy roses with an old fashioned air to them, very tough, ususally repeat flowering and scented too. Maybe not the type of bush that springs to mind when you think "rose" but one that will, at least, stand a good chance of still being there the following year. :) Some of the varieties remind me of peonies (did I spell that right?). Anyway - I like them and have grown two of them and seen a few others. Hope you enjoy them. :)

I can't sleep as I am in shoke like the rest of the village.

Yesterday afternoon a terrible thing happened. A man was beatten about
the head and was found dead in his bedroom.

You hear about it in the press but you think that it will never come near
you, but it does.

How can people do this to one another, why is there so much violence in
our world. We should be able to live together in peace.

The people who write on this board and the Boxerboard are a very good
example of how people can have different ideas and still live together in
harmony.

I with there was more of this in our world.

Daniel is reading a book based in Florida this week and was doing a little extra reading about the area and he has a question. (This bit is from Daniel) ....According to a magazine of mine Disney World is in Florida but I always thought it was somewhere else. I can't remember exactly where I thought it was but now I'm a bit confused. Does anybody know exactly where it is?

I have just found this, you kept it quiet Diane.

I have just booked to go and see The Spanish Riding School, who are
coming to the UK in November.

I saw them twice, 5 years ago, and they are spectacular, the elete in horse
training.

What really impressed my was when a horse decided that he wouldn't do
the movement, the rider just kept asking, there was no punishment. The
rider stayed calm and relaxed and the horse eventually carried out the
movement.

I was just reading the old posts here (I took a MUCH needed break from work) - I wanted some easy reading, so I thought I would read all the posts from day 1. Well.... MC mentioned something in one of the first posts about a NZ herb book (and Godiva liquer - which sounds much better than herbs, but... I digress). So, I thought I would ask - is that New Zealand herbs, are they really different than ours? Or am I wayyyyy off base here...

The daughter of a dear friend and neighbor is graduating from Nursing School and we want to get her something - I can spend about $50.
She's a good kid and has struggled to put herself through school. But she's left home about 5 years ago and I haven't seen much of her.
I have kind of lost touch with what a young single woman might like, she's 25 I think. I would like it to be a keepsake type thing, rather than the trendy, cool thing of the moment. Anyone have any good ideas for me?

The following description of my problems with canna lillies contain a lot of technical terms, such as, thingees, tubey looking thingees, wormy looking thingess, ect.

Last year I planted 3 canna lillies along my back fence. They did really well, got to be about 5 or 6 feet and then the wormey looking thingess started eating them. I sprayed them, dusted them, picked off the wormies and still they ate them so I yanked them all up. I also had probably 50 iris planted along the same fence line and they disapeared, as did my snap dragons. This year, they (the cannas) came back and I had about, oh say, 20 of them so I dug them up this time. Just went out back to check on the progress of everything else and I have about 10 more!! ( where are they coming from??) And, the wormey looking things are eating them, again. Any suggestions, technical description or not, will be appreciated.

I am going to Church Stretton in Shropshire for a week and hoping to go
and see Cadfael's Herborium and Shrewsbury where the old Abby used to
be. The Cadfael stories were based on this Abby.

As I will be in a caravan and fed up with Joe Weeing on the caravan step
or wheel I am going to take a wee post and hopefully he will wee on that.
I can throw it away then. The only problem is his aim is not very good.

well here it is! sorry for not responding sooner, with chores, gardening, dogs and a needy boyfriend, I have been slammed:)

so here it is!

in oil brown 1 white onion and 3 cloves of garlic. chopped up small.
saute in olive oil for 5 minutes, careful not TO burn it. set it aside.

add some cooked brown rice into the frying pan and stir it all together, no heat needed, I also use white rice sometimes. I usually make a lot of rice maybe 2 cups.
set aside.

mix in bowl, 1/2 a tub of a large lowfat plain yogurt, the big one, and add 2 tablespoons of cumin and a sprinkle or 2 of ginger and some salt, add 1 tablespoon of flour and mix together...

set aside.
that is your yogurt sauce, folks this dish is outstanding, and low fat.

so get a baking dish and spray with pam or olive oil so it doesn't stick. put in rice and than put your chicken breast right on top of the rice, than spoon on your yogurt sauce and bake in the oven for 1 hour on 350. use boneless, skinless chicken breast, this dish is very good, all my friends beg me to make it. ( yes I have friends) beside Tigra and Mac!

I had such a wonderful time in SF. Lisa and Tim are just the best! Thank both of you for a wonderful day. Unfortunately, I came back to some sad news. Spunky is failing. He is at the vet's office right now, where they will take x-rays, tests, and possibly do dialysis. His liver functions are off the wall, his tummy is very distended (may be cancer) and his kidneys are failing. I just pray we are not doing this to prolong the inevitable. I don't want to see him in any pain, but the vet says if the dialysis works, this could prolong his life. This is a very tough decision for us to make, but we want to do everything possible, before we decided to put in to sleep. I missed all of you, and will try to catch up when I get more time. Love you guys!!

Well, Ok - not him his fish. ;) He now has baby platy's (they're smallish and orange, and other colours as well, and they're live bearers as oppossed to egg layers). Mom had about 24 babies we think and is now removed from the tank in order that she doesn't decide that snack time has come about!! All very exciting - more babies ....a breeder in the making just like his Mum and Dad (fish that is LOL).

Who else has fish? We have 4 show tanks (and one large one that is in the pipeline but Andrew needs to make a stand for it and get a big enough filteration system as well) and a few breeding tanks. I get a bit sick of them but that's Ok - I don't have to do the maintainance except feed them occassionaly and admire them. :) I just get frustrated when fish die for no apparent reason and I can't dose them up with my witches brews. *G* But all in all they do well and are nice to look at. :) Anyone else?

I thought I would share with you how "neat" out Timmy is. ALthough we all new that already, I thought I Would elaborate.

As you all know I met Tim on Saturday at golden gate park with Faye. I had a peek in Tim's truck to see where Potter and Radar sat. I could not belieive my eyes, He has a nice F150 king cab truck, in the king cab area he has made a bench seat for the boys. It looked more like a throne!! this area is loaded with quilts, and nice blanket's, I think he might even have padding back there for them, it was all plush and done up, these boys even had pillows around. it was to cute............. Tim also has these neat poop bags that he carries around that are on a roll and he carries in his pouch 3 different type of dog treats, he is so awesome........ He also has the boys very well trained to heal, I was so impressed, they walk nicely on a double coupler leash, the boys are so cute and so wiggily. I love them both, there personalities are so good, little Potter melted me BIG time. They maul you with kisses and they even pin you down on the ground..... I love this when Mac does it to me...........

Tim gave Tigra and Mac each a gift, Mac got a giant squeeky big mac burger and Tigra got a neat rope/frisbee idea, she loves firsbee and will love this toy:)

Tim treats these boys like they were children, but don't we all, Tim takes the cake with there bed in the truck, it looks like something fit for humans:):) a king and queen maybe.

Tim is such a nice man, and Faye, what can I say, she is just like you would picture, SWEET as pie and so sincere, she is very funny to, we had a great day yesterday. It's so neat to meet someone you have been e mailing with for 2 years, you feel like you know them already! I hope you can all meet someday....

well, off to yard and hose work duties!

Hi Guys,

what a neat idea! I love this board. Today I am going to plant another tomatoe plant. Last year my tomatoes were not very good. They didn't have a lot of flavor, I ended up tossing them and mooching tomatoes off my friends that grew there's more successsfully. ( got any tomotoes)????? does anyone have any secret idea's on how to make them SPECTACULAR????? I did fertilze, with a natural product called Maxsea.. maybe I need the miracle grow junky stuff???I am going to do them in a pot, since I have no room in my yard, it's crammed with beautiful flowers and perenials. and I need to get my butt out there and start puddering soon..

I had to run out the door to pick her up from school. Her glucose test was 589 with ketones (acetone in the urine) over 2000. She was begging to stay at school, but I'll need to be checking frequently. I'm guessing her fast acting insulin went bad. Anyway, we stopped at the drugstore on the way home to get new vials and picked up some dandy consolation prizes. Jess has a stuffed boxer and a lawn fishing game. Keenie picked a spitting snake and a jungle safari kit complete with compass, canteen, magnifying glass - the works. I have on my hiking boots, floppy canvas hat and khaki shorts. Off to discover what lurks in the depths of the back yard. After that we're roller blading, hula hooping, and pogo sticking. Wish me luck!

...VERY HAPPY Mother/teacher dance!!!! (Similar to the kidneybean but with its own unique steps ;). A few of you know about this but I just have to share.... Daniel just finished a 12 chapter book in 5 days flat!!! That is a huge achievment for him, his reading (or lack of reading) was the main reason I pulled him from school. Not only did he read it - he understood it, enjoyed it, giggled over it, got sad about it - and learnt neat new stuff about conservation, the Hawaiin Islands and the USA in general!

I really, really recommend these books to anyone with kids in a similar age range (depending on their reading level). They are written by a mother/daughter team - Gloria Skurzynski and Alane Ferguson. OH! I just found their email addy's and a site address in the back of the book, I think I'll write and tell them how impressed I am! This is part of a series of books about the same family involved in wildlife conservation BTW and (cleverly) feature an older brother and his younger sister as the main characters - kind of covers the gender thing. :) He has another to read next week, based in Florida.

Whose been to Hawaii BTW? I need some info - general background stuff so that we can do a short summary study about it. :) Next question.... (Diane looks innocent) ...who knows anything about Florida? ;) LOL!!

I needed some purple candles - not lavender, but dark purple. I needed a certain shape and height and I wanted purple! I went to umpteyleven places today to find some. Why is nothing ever simple?
Finally......at the last store, a young woman asked if she could help and I explained I needed PURPLE and the size and shape. She went in the back and came out with *exactly* what I had in mind - and they were only $2.99 each. Oh happy day!
So I came home and unwrapped them and could tell they were scented (I hadn't noticed that.)
Now what do you think that sweet young woman had found for me....?
PRUNE scented candles! They smell to high heaven.....but they *are* the right color and size!
(I'm going to put them in the garage and let them give off their noxious prune scent for awhile.)

I'll start you all off with a funny story. My little one Jessie calls her Auntie Maggie today. She talks for about five minutes calling the person on the other end Lizard and Kimodo (sp?) Dragon (that's what she calls her Uncle Chuck for some odd reason), inviting them over for supper.....then brings me the phone with a puzzled look and says, "Mommy, I don't know who this is." I take the phone and ask to speak to Maggie. The man on the other end replies, "There's no Maggie here. This is the Pepsi Cola company in Munster, Indiana." ROTFLMAO My poor child was so humiliated and here I am, bad mom, holding my sides and laughing maniacally. Still snickering as I sit here....
