Hi Diane.. No, no thunderstorms here, just fog, fog and more fog! Some rain, but mostly just cold and foggy. The cats are getting to be the size of horses.Eat! Eat! Eat!
Haven't been doing a whole lot of exciting stuff, tho I went to a very poweful play last Tues night. A friend Wahibi who was in the performance I was in in April was also in this play. It's called 'The Waiting Room' and is about the refugee situation in Australia.

Thanks so much for all the useful info and links. :) You too Ellie, excellent idea (now I just need some tips on how to keep the dogs from thinking Aunt Ellie came up with that just for them ;)
We've had no end of thunder and lightening here over the last week which has caused me to use the computer with a great degee of caution (nothing like trying to toast the software!) It's been awesome but I'm more than ready for the fine break we are supposed to be headed for (with it comes the cold is the downside). How are things in Aus? Same stuff with you Ellie? Meanwhile I've visited a Boxer pup, picked up a pittie (he's not residing here though) and am babysitting Sam tonight as my sis is staying at the childrens hospital with her son who had to go in suddenly. Tommorow I will drop him off and collect a nine year old Boxer boy who has a strange story attached. I will let you know how I go with Ben, fingers crossed that a good home can be found for this guy!!!!!
That's me for now, hope everyone and their furbabies are well. :)

- Ants! -- Ellie., 05:18:39 05/28/02 Tue (210.49.246.41)
I found that talcum powder works too. Sprinkle it across your door entrance, or whereever the little pests are coming in.. or for an Irish (lateral thinking!) approach.Last summer they were always coming in in droves thru the balcony door (second floor apartment) and smothering the cat food dishes. So I did a bit of sideways thinking and decided that maybe if the ants had their OWN food they wouldnt come in! So towards the end of the balcony away from the door, I put a couple of saucers of honey/water/ or jam/water, or just sugar dissolved in water. It worked! They inundated those saucers and didnt come inside!

Problem With Ants
I just read this tip to keep ants from moving in.
Draw a line of Crayola Chalk around windows and doors outside your home, and around water pipes inside your home. Ants will not cross a chalk line.
ANTS
I put chalk around my dog food bowls and it seeps to be quite effective if you draw the line hard enough so the buggers can't cross it. Cinnamon also works, it clogs them up and they belly up.
This works pretty well for me. LONG TERM ANT CONTROL BAIT.
From Organic Gardening
Dissolve 1 teaspoon boric acid and 6 tablespoons of sugar in 2 cups of water. (Boric acid is available at any drugstore.) Do this in a clean jar so you can see when all the boric acid crystals are dissolved. Soak some cotton
balls in the solution. Make bait dispenser out of old plastic margarine tubs with lids. Punch holes in sides of tubs so the ants can get inside. Put the soaked cotton balls into the container, and cover them with the lids so the bait won't dry out.
Place the bait containers wherever you see ants. Clean the containers and freshen up the bait solution at least once a week. Be patient! Let those worker ants continually carry boric acid back to feed the ants in their nest.
After a few weeks, reduce the boric acid content to ½ teaspoon boric acid for each solution. Using the very low dose makes it more likely that the surviving ants will continue eating the bait and taking it back to the nest.

- Mould on decking. -- Diane, 14:27:20 05/23/02 Thu (203.97.100.46)
Does anyone remember my problem with the mouldy decking saga? And I wanted a way of cleaning it that wouldn't adversly effect the dogs. Over the summer I was simply water blasting if necessary (Andrew nicely put a hose at the end of the decking for me) and that was working fine but now it's trying hard to be autumn and the mould is reemerging and causing problems despite my vigorous efforts with the hose. Sooooo... yesterday I was thinking about this and wondering if a product we have here called Sugar Soap (a liquid cleaner) would do the job. But I really didn't want to use anything that might be sudsy at all because it can be a nightmare to hose all the residue off and sometimes you end up with an even more slippery problem. But that lead to this silly sounding idea....
Take a large amount of sugar and sprinkle it liberally over the mouldy (slightly damp) decking. Then I really cheated (and yes, I guess it must have looked silly). I got out an old pair of Andrew's work socks that are nearly ready to be retired and I shuffle/scrubed my way backwards and forwards across and around the decking. Then I hosed it thoroughly. It really did help, I think I'll need to do it again and I may have to resort to some proper scubbing in some areas but this was easy, readily avaliable, cheap, effective.... all good things. :) Plus safe for the dogs!
Actually what made me think of this was trying to get an essential oil burner bowl (the ceramic type) clean the other day. It was full of ultra sticky residue and I just couldn't get it off. I tried dishwashing detergent, salt and various other things and then decided to give sugar a go - it scrubbed clean in a few minutes!
So there you go, my handy tip for the week, month whatever... hope it helps someone else. :)

I messing around with some soap scents. Here are my grand ideas: A kitchen soap scented with tomato leaf and bits of sun-dried tomato and basil. A kitchen soap made with coffee (to cut strong odors) and scented with hazelnut coffee. Margarita scented soap - three parts lime to one part rosemary - thought I'd add that in in case you like Margaritas, Diane, and had the oils around the house. They mix up well for diffusing. A gardener's soap with either ground pumice or sterilized sand packaged in little clay pots, no scent yet. What do you think? The margarita smells heavenly, but I'm not sure that people would want to wash with it.....
Hope everyone is having a nice spring, where it's spring that is....it's been downright cold here the last two weeks. Down to almost freezing at night. Lots of rain which was unpleasant, but we ended up with a pair of Mallard ducks swimming in the back yard. Pretty cool! Also, does anyone have a remedy for ants? With the weather warming up we've ended up with a lot of ants in the house. I don't want to have to bug bomb the house again so am looking for a more natural alternative. I know there is one, just can't seem to remember it....

Weather here (melbourne) is real Indian summer, a long series of fine,WARM days! After our cool summer the trees don't seem to know where they're at. Most are still bearing their full load of leaves, not much change to the Autumn colors.. it's weird, seeing June starts our WINTER.
Went and got my passport photos done on Friday..UGHH! What a nightmare vision in front of my eyes! Why do PP photos make you look like the she monster from Hell? (Cos you really ARE??!) Going to Canada later this year to visit my brother +family.. so guess that is my next big thing!

Some of you know that there is a group of us here working on starting up our own rescue group for Boxers and I've been pondering the possibilities of slightly off the cuff fund raising ideas as part of this. Now one thing I know is that if someone does just ONE MORE sausage sizzle I might well scream and dump water on their cooking equipment! (Truly I'm a mad woman at heart. ;) But of course we all know that food does have the potential to raise those much needed $$$$ on fun days etc so how about I design a very unique "Boxer Burger" with a *special secret sauce* that is only avaliable on our Very Special Boxer Burgers! How does that sound? Maybe if we can hit on one that is good enough we can even sell the sauce (shades of Paul Newman) in bottles on fund raising days. :) So...... I need a little help please. I'm willing to do the cooking, Andrew will, I am Very Sure *G*, happily take on the ardorous role of "official taster" but I need some inspiration. Anyone have an out of this world BBQ type sauce they would like to share (I reserve the right to modify as may be needed). C'mon ladies, it's for a terrific cause. :)

Someone was saying to me that they now have spring flowers and blossom on their trees, is this true? Has a touch of warmth finally come to the far northern reaches (because I don't know where it has come from, it's still warm down here so far LOL). In fact my trees can't seem to decide if they are going to drop these leaves this year or not and here we sit with (for the first time in forever) a full kit out of firewood, waiting for winter to arrive and I'm wearing a cotton shirt and skirt and sleeping with the bedroom window open wide still. :) No spring flowers though :( so someone had better share pictures I think!!!!

This is the second time that the hospital have done this, the first time he became a zombi and had to be proped up in the chair at Christmas. He doesn't remember anything about that Christmas.

A weight and stress problem -- Margaret, 10:13:22 04/04/02 Thu (213.1.163.249)
I have been wanting to lose weight for some time now but because of the stress I am under I haven't been very successful. I have got to be more determined and that means having to stand in the kitchen and make meals. I didn't take any notice of the lovely meals that was put up, but I did intend to but never got round to it. Sorry, that was the stress I was under and still am.
I bought myself a vegetarian book, Cranks Bible, looked through it, saw some good recipies and have lost the book, how I don't know and it is a very big book, I remember looking at it but don't remember where I put it.
Please can anyone help me out with very easy recipies, I still have to look after Bill and he does take a lot of time. Just when I am at the most involved period of making a meal he wants to go to the toilet and I have to leave the meal, and come back to a disaster and have to eat burnt offerings.
I must make the effort to lose weight, I must make the effort to lose weight, I must make the effort to lose weight, etc. etc. etc.

I've been playing around selling some of my homemade soaps and I've had a pretty good response. I've got an order for five bags for the American Legion raffle this April and think it may be a good idea to include some type of contact info. in the bags. Also, the manager of the biggest health food store in my area, Sunrise Farm Markets, has given me his card and asked that I bring in some samples. If the girls like them I'll get a discount on supplies and they'll sell them on consignment. They currently sell some handmade soaps for $5 for 3oz - I sell mine for $1 an ounce and nothing less than a 3.5oz bar. Now....despite everyone around here insisting I should do this, it means becoming a business and all the rigamarole that goes with it...so I'm thinking long and hard before going ahead. Truth be told, I'm intimidated. Anyway, the point of this post was to get some ideas for a name. I have to have *something* to put on my packaging. All of my soaps, lip balms, etc. are natural products. I want to go with something that conveys these are simple, natural products that make you feel good. My dad's suggestions of Rub-A-Dub and Scrub-A-Dub aren't what I'm looking for. Nor is my MIL's SissySoap (Sissy is my nickname). Not professional or catchy enough. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as would any suggestions on favorite types/scents of soaps. Thanks guys. Hope you all had a wonderful Easter!

Oohh how I love the outdoors! My waterfall from the big upper pond to the lower pond sounds so nice now in full flow. The little peepers "frogs" are starting their night song..oh so beautiful. All the ice is finally out of the ponds.I even love the hungry crows that come for their breakfast. All the wild ducks are pairing up-soon I will have baby ducklings following their parents for food-they come right to my back patio for cracked corn.
forgive me but I am elated with thoughts and signs of spring!
Hope everyone is having a great time at whatever they are doing.Love to all..and I might add I have lost enough weight that I won't look like a beached whale while swimming! I owe thanks to you folks for the great salad recepies and to all my exercise and swimming.Catch you all later..Tina

Anyway, Pam had to ring at 10 this morning and find out if Daisy was ok to come home.. she was.. but the cost for her hospital stay and etc was $700 which the vet surgery wanted in full NOW! Pam didnt have it and said the max she could pay on the spot was $400 and she would pay the rest next Wednesday when she gets her pay from work. That was kind of battle, but they finally agreed to release Daisy on the $400 (Pam has only been attending that vet for FIFTEEN years and has never defaulted on the payments. Anyway, Daisy now has to be on low fat food.. which the vet says you can buy (named a few) or make at home.. so please anyone got any good make at home, low fat recipes for doggies?
Ellie.

I email my brother in Canada and he me (Melb Aus) on almost daily basis. We did so yesterday and everything was fine. This morning I sent a message off to him and almost instantly got a message back from the server saying it couldnt be delivered because of a 'permanaent fatal error"
in the address! Not sure what this means? I understand permanent means permanent?! But my bro gave no indication yesterday of computer probs, or changing his email address or anything of that ilk! Any clues please?!

- Computers and birthdays -- Diane, 12:16:08 03/19/02 Tue (203.97.107.177)
A very quick note to say that I need to replace my mouse (I think that's all it is - sure hope so!). It keeps trying to click on everything and using the computer like this is a pain! But I have plans for the next three days (all tied up with Daniel's birthday, his 13th this Friday) so I might not be around much till the weekend or maybe early next week - depending on when I get the new mouse, at the moment I have to play this game where I try and move *around* anything clickable on the page in front of me which is kind of entertaining but kind of Not! Best send this now before it A) decides to do it for me or B) makes it all disappear... neither of which are good options IMO.

- A funny Jessie story -- Kris, 20:30:51 03/17/02 Sun (209.254.180.138)
For those of you that don't know, Jess is my six year old daughter. I also suppose that those of you not in the US won't find this as amusing as I did, but I'm sharing anyway. Jess came up to me the other day with a five dollar bill in her hand. "I have something to show you Mommy. This man is Abraham Lincoln. He was a very great man, even if he did have silly hair." I, of course, agreed that Abraham Lincoln was indeed a great man. She then flips the bill over. I believe it's a picture of the U.S. Supreme Court Building on the back (someone correct me if I'm wrong). "And look, Mommy. This is Abraham Lincoln's house." "Who told you that?" I ask. "Nobody. I just know. Look. There he is sitting in his chair on his front porch. He wouldn't sit there if it wasn't his house. Maybe he's waiting for someone to come over."

Diane...THANK YOU -- Marlene, 17:03:10 03/16/02 Sat (216.126.138.34)
I have been struggling to learn how to use my digital camera (more specifically the *+#&*# software) and today I was able to post my first digital pic on AAB. But digital camera or not....if you hadn't told me how to post my photos on the web, I would just be sending them in email.
I never thanked you enough for that help, I was so excited about being able to post silly pictures of my dog, I just hurried off and started getting into trouble.
I also learned how to type in italic, bold and post links...thanks to you. You are a natural and supportive teacher and I want you to know I appreciate your effort as well as your invitation to practice here (which I have done many times.)
Hugs and many thanks - you're never too old to learn!

- Another funny money story.. -- Ellie., 14:03:36 03/15/02 Fri (210.49.249.218)
This happened last year. I was at the shopping plaza and happened to notice an elderly lady at the butcher's counter.. she bought her meat then without looking.. slid her hand down to her shoulderbag to put her money(notes) back in, but she missed and it fell onto the floor. She didnt notice, and neither did anyone else apparently except me. She walked off, so I scooped up the money (a lot!) and hurried after her. When I handed it back she as SO grateful, and asked me where I was going next? I said the cake shop, so she insisted that she pay for whatever I was going to buy! I tried to tell her it didnt matter but she insisted. Well, all I had intended to buy was a sausage roll and a custard tart.. which came to about $4.. so I did, and the lady paid for them. But I've always wondered what she would have done if I'd said I had planned to buy a $25 Black Forest cake! LOL!

That was a great story Tina.. I bet the lady was SO glad to have her money back. Reminded me of an incident with my friend Shirl. Shirl often gives me books and magazines she's finished with. One day she drove me home and we were sitting in her car talking when she handed me a couple of books. I flicked thru one and found a $50 note between the pages! I laughed.. and asked did she mean me mean to have the money too! She didnt. but was grateful I'd found it.. she'd put it there for 'something' then forgotten it.
Hope you have a great day out with your daughter and grand-daughter.

Does anyone know if this is true? -- Diane, 16:01:05 03/14/02 Thu (203.97.107.160)
Does good quality rose essential oil tend to become unpourable unless it is warmed prior to using? That's what I've been told, is it true does anyone know? Also I have to share that I made a 'little' booboo this morning while refreshing some potpourri, I went to add a few drops of lemon grass essential oil but forgot - no drip lid thingie in that bottle... on no, LOL.... at least the house smells nice (very lemony - but nice. :)

Well, I've mislaid a birthday card with a money order in it for $100 that was a gift from my son. I couldn't-wouldn't COULDN"T have inadvertently thrown it out.. but I've checked my 'safe' places, a folio where I keep documents, and a carved Chinese wooden box where I store other important bits and pieces.. but no sign of it. So pleae send some magic my way that I find it. It's not just the money.. but that it was a gift for a special purpose.
Thanks everyone..

Guess what Daniel just found in our backyard? Thank God that the dogs did not find it first!!! It's a little (baby) ginger kitten (there are way too many desexed animals around here) that I have put in our baby budgie flight in the shed for now (no - there are NO budgies in there right now LOL). It has water, a dirt box of sorts, and a bed so far and now I guess I have to go feed it... something (no cat food in the house any more but I'll find something for it) and then I'll wait. To see if anyone comes looking for it (bet they don't though - like I said... way too many cats and dogs around here that are allowed to just breed and breed). If no one claims it after a few days I'll set about finding a home for it. Last year it was a rabbit that I took in that was roaming, as they say.. variety is the spice of life. *G*

- I thought I'd catch up on this week -- Diane, 18:31:35 03/09/02 Sat (203.97.107.88)
We appear to be all over our bugs so I thought I'd take the time to catch up. It's been a good week over all, Piper did really well in her class, Joan said that she could see real progress and that I'd been working with her. Soon we'll have to have an enforced three week break as all my girls are coming into season (Shilo is in, Piper is close and Megan will undoubtedly follow them), I will continue to work from home though. Piper met a really rude dog at training - same dog Sam took exception to the week before (a Dachshound [sp?]) - anyway the thing is rude because Pip never takes exception to any other dog there but this thing "said" something rude to her as we skirted the paddock and I could see it all over in her body language it was just like "Mum, did you HEAR what he said to me??!!!!". I say well done to the dogs owner for taking it to basic obedience but rather him than me, LOL. I think it is very hard for some people to grasp the concept that little dogs can be really rude (as rude as any other breed that is) and they should deal with it, good for him for trying to get a handle on it.
Moving on, we went for a picnic/BBQ dinner last night (afternoon) with friends at the place in the pic I posted below of the beach. Andrew and Daniel went kayaking and our friends had a go too, it was a lovely day, the food was wonderful (it always is cooked over driftwood and eaten outdoors!) and we all came home very relaxed. :) While we were there I met a lovely lady visiting form the UK who told me that you couldn't swim in the ocean over there, it was too brown and not safe, but she has been enjoying swimming here while on holiday. Her neice was in the water with one of her two dogs (apparently a pit bull cross) and on the beach with the lady I was talking to was Hazel, Am. Staffie bull terrier. A lovely girl who had been ill used by her former owner who attempted to fight her and was less than kind so Hazel was not an effusive dog but her manners were beyond reproach (even to the very cocky Cocker Spaniel who came running up to get in her face). She is not quite the water baby her foster brother was though BUT when he went in with a stick she followed to prove her point (and apparently she always wins the stick off him, LOL).
What else... oh Daniel has started a project on 'Dangerous Creatures' (because I know he'll enjoy it and I hope to expand his writing skills while he's working on it). As part of this we went to the Auckland Zoo on Friday and watched the lions being fed, it was awesome! They put out elephant dung for them to roll in and taste (it's all part of an overall behaviour thing to keep the lions in good mental shape) and they fed them veal ribs which they had not had before but made short work of.
It's been a lovely week and today is a lovely laid back Sunday... I hope you have all enjoyed the same kind of week!
All the best to all of you for now,
Diane.
