For those of us whose eyes get burnt looking at CRT's, there is a book published by Lutes International that does a perfect comparison of the I.V. with the KJV. It clearly indicates all deletions and additions, as well as word changes. The name:

The Bible Corrected by Joseph Smith
Compiled by Kenneth and Lyndell Lutes

Among the things you will discover in this book is that there are unique changes to the text in the 1991 edition of the I.V., that did not exist in previous editions.

Below is a list of the books of the Bible that were not corrected by Joseph Smith, Jr.

Ruth
Ezra
Esther
The Song of Solomon (It was deleted as not being "inspired.")
Lamentations
Obadiah
Micah
Nahum
Habakkuk
Zephaniah
Haggai
2 John
3 John

So there are only twelve books of the Bible that John, a legal representative of the CofC, can safely quote from versions of the bible other than the Inspired Version. If he quotes from any other versions, he must first compare those versions to the I.V. to make sure that there were no additions, deletions, or word changes to the text before he will know if the Protestant bible he has accurately represents the message declared authoritative by the CofC Conference.

Another useful book is Richard J. Matthews' book "A Plainer Translation. Joseph Smith's Translation of the Bible." It is not as thorough as the first work in showing all the changes, but it has a pretty exhaustive commentary on the ones that are listed.

The old RLDS book "Joseph Smith's New Translation of the Bible" won't do for this, because it does not contain all the changes made to obtain the I.V. text. The book was supposed to contain the entire I.V. and KJV text of Genesis, in double comparative columns, but it does not. I would not recommend buying it to study the I.V. It is only of value as a collector's item; it is too defective to have scholastic value at this point.

I'm surprised that over 140 years after declaring the Inspired Version to be the only authoritative version of the bible for doctrinal purposes for the CofC that the CofC still has no commentary on the Inspired Version.
Rather than speculate on why the CofC does not promote the version that it has declared authentic and authoritative (rather than let it merely exist,) I will stop by simply pointing out that it does not. It even sells copies of the New International Version as its "missionary edition" of the bible.

George
