After further study, I remembered something that I had been told years before. A visiting minister to a southern church heard during the scripture reading of the New Testament:

Luke 7:34 "... a friend of Republicans and sinners."

The visitor asked the pastor about it, and the pastor said, "We don't correct him. He thinks that's what it says."

I think that "judge not lest ye be judged" in Matthew is read the same way. I think those who are so fond of insinuating that others violate this instruction are actually reading "grudge not lest thou begrudge," and that it refers to actual diserning judgment is the furthest thing from their minds. And, like the old Southern elder, they believe that is exactly what it says.
