Lois, I have to differ with you on this one.
The people who persecuted Joseph Smith, Jr. did so because they were offended by the fact that what Smith taught was completely against their upbringing in a Christian culture.

The Community of Christ would not persecute Joseph Smith, Jr. for disagreeing with Christian doctrines. The Community of Christ really has very little use for them, either, except as window dressing. What the CofC admires about Joseph Smith, Jr. is the fact that when things didn't suit him, he'd just get a revelation from God changing them --even if the previous revelation had claimed that the revelation was eternal and unchanging.

Joseph's cool factor is very high with the current leadership, which does not disavow his approach, it only disavows his results. Having gotten bored with doctrinal stabiity over the first one hundred years or so of the Reorganization, they expect to do the same thing all over again and get different results this time.

I'm gonna be like him, yeah,
I'm gonna be just like him.
