Part Five (Cont from four)

O.C> In my judgment, you have.

RICHARD Uh, huh.

O.C> And I think that judgment is probably shared by others.

RICHARD I'm sure it is. I'm sure that all the liberals feel this way. That's the direction it's going.

O.C> Don't... don't, don't classify me as a liberalist.

RICHARD But you're supporting the liberalists.

O.C> That's a point of view that is yours...

RICHARD I know.

O.C> ...Richard, not mine.

RICHARD Uh, huh.

O.C> Don't classify me, either as a conservative. I don't need to be classified.

RICHARD Well, you're not on trial here, so...

O.C> No, and I–you're not on trial, either. There's no trial in this thing. We're not, there's no trial involved.

RICHARD Okay. The thing we're trying is to find out what's right.

O.C> The thing we're questioning is whether or not there's a way to gr... to get at a reconciliation, and get your relationship with the church [breaks off in Richard's following interruption]

RICHARD [unintelligible]

O.C> Well, [unintelligible]

RICHARD I'm with the church. I have no, uh...

O.C> You're with the church as you interpret it.

RICHARD Uh, huh. Yes. Uh, I, uh, as far as I know, well, every doctrine that I've proposed, uh, is, found in the scriptures. Uh, what's wrong if somebody, uh, points out that I'm misinterpreting, and then I, uh, uh, change, I uh, back off, uh, but, as long as I believe that it's true, I can't change from it.

O.C> I like you Richard.

RICHARD Why, thank you. Uh, truly, I, uh, have no axes to grind. I'm not mad at anybody. Uh, I, I, weep for some. But you'll have to admit that these men say that they're changing the church. It's been published over and over again in black and white. And I say that the church can't change. The Book of Mormon says that.

[six second pause]

O.C> Well, Richard, I don't think we have any choice, but to go ahead and take the action that we all have looked forward to for ten years.

RICHARD Well, you do what you have to do, and I'll do what I have to do. And we can pray for each other.

O.C> Will you lose as much sleep about it as I do?

RICHARD No, sir.

O.C> I will.

RICHARD I know that what I'm doing is right. And I'm not going to lose any sleep.

O.C> I'll tell you why I'll lose sleep.

RICHARD Okay.

O.C> There is no way that I can take an action that affects a man's ministry without it hurting me, because I know his family is hurt.

RICHARD They're used to it by now. They've been expecting it for years.

O.C> His close friends will be hurt, and the church, every time this kind of thing happens, the church, like any other part of the organism that we believe in, is diminished just that much more, because...

RICHARD I know.

O.C> ... The support we need from everybody ought to continue to be there.

RICHARD That's right. And if the Presidency was teaching the gospel, then I'd be behind them a hundred percent. Nobody had any greater devotion to W. Wallace Smith than myself. And, uh, they say I, uh...

O.C> Were you personal friends with Wallace?

RICHARD No, no, I've never met him, except, uh, at meetings, I've heard him preach, and all of this, and, uh, I believe that Wallace B. had the right to, uh, take the office, see, it says in the Section 43 says that he "would come in at the gate," which he did, and "teach the former revelations," which he did not. He taught the opposite to those former revelations. Therefore, he has lost his, uh, right to preside.

O.C> Do you have a personal relationship with Wally?

RICHARD No, I don't know any of these men personally.

O.C> But, you mentioned Alan a while ago. Do you have a personal relationship with him?

RICHARD No, in [unintelligible]. Twenty-five years ago, I did. But I don't now. I don't know any of the others personally, and I have nothing against them personally; as far as I know they're all Christian gentlemen.

O.C> It would have been well if you'd gotten acquainted with them.

RICHARD Well, I...

O.C> It would have changed your point of view.
