Lois, I wonder what Matthew Bolton thinks of Paul's comment in the third chapter of Romans: "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."

Every unrepentant sinner in the world has a good reason to diss the church of Jesus Christ.

When I was an unrepentant lifestyle-sinner, and in it up to my eyeballs -- (that's what "lifestyle" means) -- I found fault with the communion ritual of my own church.

'We know, O Lord, that we are not worthy to gather up the crumbs under thy table...."

My response to this was similar to Bolton's: "You've got some nerve expecting me to say this **#)_#$!" That's the trouble with promoting sin in a Christian church. In a real Christian church, there are already too many former sinners who have given up homosexuality, adultery, drug abuse, fornication, stealing, etc. They don't want to do it any more, but don't describe themselves as nonsinners, or righteous, because once a person becomes an alcoholic, he's an alcoholic forever, whether he drinks or not. And sin is like that too. Once someone sins, he is a sinner. Just because he stops sinning with the help of Jesus' saving grace and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit does not make him a nonsinner. And all the sober AA members know all the sick little self-justifications that the sinner uses to proclaim himself "good enough." It's rather like AA. Those who have been around long enough to actually be sober can see right through those very denials and self-justifying arguments-to-no-one.

George
