Lois, I agree. God can save anybody, anywhere, and keep them saved in any environment. However, God's power is not the problem. The saved's ability to cooperate with that power is the problem. Deliberately placing oneself in an environment in which sin is celebrated, promoted, and glorified creates a gradient that works against the sinner even realizing that he is a sinner. Sinners in those sorts of environments think that their life is rotten because bad people don't like them, and that they are having bad luck on top of that.

I had bad luck and was persecuted by evil people for about twenty years until I realized that I was actually just as bad as the bad people, and I was only reaping what I had been sowing.

In short, when a sinner in denial finds a haven in which he is told that there is nothing to deny and is told that he has no difficulties that cannot be blamed on persecution from mostly imaginary people, hopefully he will eventually wake up to the reality that that his new found friends are friends because they are just as bad as he is.

But there is hope for Matthew Bolton, because God is more powerful that you or I can even imagine.

George
