I just need to add information to those who wish to attend the CofC, but not join. I do not have complete information, but during a silencing (defrocking) counseling meeting during the mid 1980's, in which O.C. "Chuck" Henson was discussing the CofC leadership's problems with Richard Price, pending his having his priesthood license yanked, Brother Price brought up the subject of a lawsuit that the church had filed against a woman known to both of them. Henson acknowledged the suit, and emphasized that it was not the woman's membership (if indeed she was on the rolls of the CofC) that the church ws suing her over. This interview was audio-recorded by elder Price with O.C. Henson's permission, and the audiotape is available. Richard Price was eventually excommunicated from the church, but I do not know if the lady he discussed with O.C. Henson lost her house or not.

Apparently in the CofC, it doesn't matter whether you be a member of the priesthood, a layman, or just a frequent visitor, if you have a disagreement with the hierarchy about anything whatsoever, if you are considered a particularly troublesome member or participant in the church, they will come after you. Fear of this very sort of thing is what frightens people away from the Mormon church in Utah.
