Subject: Another Scully defender!

I realize I'm stepping into this conversation much later, but I think Scully's manner of breaking the news to Mulder goes back to something Foxy said above. The idea was that Scully will let Mulder take his time with what he has to go through and then will simply be there when he needs her. Telling Mulder in a "softer" manner would have meant putting herself in a position to give him comfort and maybe that's really not what Mulder needs. By making herself out to be the "giver," Mulder has to become the "taker," and is forced to accept understanding that he may not be ready to receive. She doesn't assume that Mulder will need to run into her arms immediately at the sign of tragedy, and she doesn't coax him into feeling a certain way.

And just because her arms aren't open immediately doesn't mean that they won't be when he needs her-- we saw how completely understanding, supportive, and even protective (you better make it three pairs of tickets) she was of him tonight. Scully rules!
