I agree their deepening friendship that started 7 years ago is the most important thing and I wouldn't ever want them to lose that. But why do we have to? If you look at a scene like he one at the end of Mor Fati it's clear how important their friendship to them since that is how they refer to one another. That may always be how they think of one another even if they are lovers. But I think they know they can both finally handle more. It just doesn't erase the friendship.

You talked above about them having one night of passion and then saying that's it. We haven't seen one night of passion. What is so clever about this is how underplayed it is. So much so that's it's barely there at all which I think is how CC wants it. We have just the essence of a relationship without any of the obvious signs. I wish you could see just how subtle it is Sleepless. We arn't getting any silly dialog or public displays of affection or any of the standard signs of romance you see on any other TV show. Everything is private between them with just a few small tidbits here and there that we get witness. And sometimes these moments play out as something very non soaplike but very Mulder and Scullylike such as watching them needling each other about a case and being thrilled by this and getting off a bit on the joy of still having opposing viewpoints. No, "yes honey, you're right" for these two.

Mulder and Scully have managed to build this friendship into something so powerful that nothing can break it down, not even sex! It will always be their number one priority and that's what we are seeing. No visible nights of passion, heck we haven't even seen them kiss! We may somewhere down the linbe and we may even see more obvious evidence of a sexual relationship but I'm guessing not until the last ep with Mulder and Scully or the next movie.

But right now we are watching two friends grow and change and learn from each other and enjoy each other's company and laugh and cry together and share in each other's pain and be there to support each other and not let anyone or anything get in the way of that. Feeling a need to express something more intimate with one another after all these years does not destroy everything they have created together.

det, who's glad Sleepless is back to add more good debate :-)
