It seemed to me that the only reason CSM could have gone to such trouble was to get closer to Scully. There had to be a significant reason to drag her on the wild goose chase. I wondered if he was trying to find out how she was feeling and what she was prepared to do; even to the extent of questioning her about Mulder. Was he trying to sound her out? Maybe the scientist was only peddling a false cure, or maybe he was just a plant. It looked like CSM was working at making an association with her, so he could maybe call upon her again.
