Subject: Closure - what Closure?

Hi all S7 watchers.

I've been out of commission for a while - Closure! Well, this was an eagerly awaited episode, wasn't it? In context of the previous week's there was the fear about Truelove having killed off all the children: would Samantha be amongst them? I didn't know what to expect.

So what did we get? Hmmm, well, I wasn't too convinced by Closure as a way of solving the Samantha conundrum. I was confused by Piller the psychic and the woman who was imprisoned, talking about walk-ins. One moment the walk-ins were spirits rescuing the children from terrible fates, and freeing them to walk among the stars. The next moment, there were suggestions that the children weren't 'dead' but were living some ethereal existence. Maybe it was both. But Mulder came back from his encounter with Samantha and said "They're dead". I couldn't reconcile this - Mulder has never been religious and he was acting for all the world that he felt her spirit had risen and gone to heaven, yet he said she was 'dead'. It wasn't clear.

The big thing that emerged was that for Mulder this *was* indeed closure and in that respect, it was satisfying as a viewer to see Mulder happy and 'free'. I cried for him when he was able to hug the fourteen year old Samantha and that he felt he made contact with his real sister.

But, what of the Samantha clones? Are they not, in essence, Samantha, grown up? Can Mulder now abandon all thought of his sister as a grown up? Those women may have been clones, but at least once, he has had an emotional reunion with one of them who had 'grown up'. Is she not Samantha and wouldn't Mulder want to know what happened to her? Or, because she was the result of alien experimentation, can he just dismiss grown up Samantha?

Question: if it was so easy for Scully to get investigation leads about Samantha from her case file, how come she or Mulder had never followed up the leads before?

Question: why did Mrs Mulder burn all the photos? Or did she? Did she really kill herself, I wonder? It seemed callous burning her children's photos, I felt.

I thought the scene in the wood, with the children, when Mulder met Samantha was beautifully shot and the music was perfect. It had exactly the right atmoshphere. I also liked the seance scene. The diary reading scene was heartbreaking. "I think I had a brother with brown hair, who used to tease me" (Sob!)

So, I was a bit undecided about this story. As a two parter, it turned from one thing into another (as two-parters often do) but I wondered how we drifted so far away from Amber Lynn and her parents. I thought maybe Mulder could have spoken to them again. Maybe I was foolish in expecting an XF to be conclusive. They seldom are, so perhaps the title 'Closure' was meant to be ironic. But to see the weight (of guilt and sorrow) lifted from Mulder's shoulders was wonderful
