The Amazing Maleeni

Well, without there being *great* things to say about this one, I think I can add this one to the last two and say: good and enjoyable if not outstanding. Is it perhaps that Mulder and Scully have been in these episodes together so much? Maybe. I also think I’m suffering early Seasons nostalgia, as these last three eps have all had a recognisable atmosphere. I have enjoyed the experimental XF – don’t get me wrong, but I have felt quite keenly that S6 overdid it in experimentation occasionally.

So, I thought this episode was a tale with a mystery at its heart. Like a Hercule Poirot story. There must have been a way – how did T.A.M. do it? We would be watching and all the time thinking and asking ourselves questions like: Was the crippled version really a twin brother? And if there were twins, which twin was dead? And how did they perform the clever head-rolling-off trick? (Great visual by the way). I also liked how Mulder and Scully’s involvement with the case was very much a part of the planned outcome. I thought of Columbo, actually, and how the very astute murderers would somehow manage to make Columbo have a hand in their attempt to cover up their crime.

There were some good moments, like Mulder showing his sleight of hand skills and Scully showing her twisty-hand-around special effect. This trick swapping put me in mind Humbug, in which they also performed some magic tricks. Liked how Scully called Mulder a sceptic! And yet again we had the misunderstanding that Mulder and Scully are a married couple! They just take it in their stride, now, don’t they? I like that – shows how comfortable they are. One of my favourite visual moments was when Scully had the Top Hat placed on her head. She smiled quite pleasantly before taking it off, I thought.

The B/W recap of the how-did-they-it at the end was a nice touch. This episode had a bit of style and most importantly of all – it had our heroes acting together. Always to be desired.
