I just watched Carl Sagan's "Contact" for about the hundredth time. LOL Anyhow, this movie in so many ways parallels The X-Files, IMHO. There is a scene in it where the Jodie Foster character explains "Occam's Razor". She says it is a basic scientific principle: "All things being equal, the simpliest explanation tends to be the right one."

Your theories would certainly seem to agree with the simpliest explanation being the right one.
