I haven't read all of these theories before! What a super discussion!

I'm thinking that while Mulder did indeed inherit everything from dear ole mom, not enough time had elasped since her death 'till his abduction for him to fully grasp the idea of what he had inherited. Or, maybe he did have an additional income from the dad's property and just chose to live frugally. He seemed to be a man of few material desires, other than spiffy suits! He didn't even own a car that we know of, did he?

As for the apartment, well I'm of the opinion he paid his lease in advance. There's some kind of investment, don't know what's its called, that the interest is paid monthly. So it could be that he had one or more of those investments from his dads property and all, and when he gets one of those big additions to his checking account he paid his lease in advance, and paid on his credit card, too. Ha! Anyhow, if the apt is paid for I guess it could just sit empty for months since he hasn't been officially declared dead.

Scully most certainly would have to visit on a regular schedule not only to check for clues he may have been able to leave for her, but to feed the goldfish.

Then again, maybe he was just lousy with money. Maybe he couldn't keep to a budget and failed to pay bills when due. Some people just have a problem being responsible with money, and I think he could have been like that.
That would be another good reason to pay the apt lease in advance, that and the fact that he never knew where he would be when, and perhaps miss the due date.

sigh. Listen to me talking about Mulder in the past tense.
