Subject: Problums with Theef

Disliked: Usually the interaction between M&S enhances the story, but in this ep I didn't find it interesting at all. Maybe I can blame this all on Misterio ;-) ; before I watched tonight's ep, I read his Scullybash. Ooh, blame Islandgirl too ;-) I also read her "In almost every episode..." post. *Usually* it's fun when the writers point out the character quirks in M&S- as they did in Syzygy or Field Trip- but in this case it was very superficial and didn't work for me. Was that whole "you always keep me guessing" thing supposed to be sexy? Kinda "Gosh, there's so much I learn about you every day. There are so many layers to be revealed, and I want to stick around and see them all."? THAT would be a wonderful thing to feel about a person, but I really didn't get that feeling from this ep at all. In this case "You always keep me guessing" translated more as "I never know whether I'm going to get a good or a bad reaction from you. I never know if you really believe or not." Scully's admission at the end was interesting- that perhaps all the medicine and science she knows doesn't hold all the answers- but it's hardly anything shocking, nor is it something that warrants Mulder's "you do keep me guessing" reaction. In fact, that line at the end diminished Scully's line, kind of like "so, you do get something out of it after all." Why shoud he be surprised? Interaction without insight. Theef would have been better without it.

Liked: Peetie was a very scary, very good character. Good job by the actor. My favorite scene was when "the light went on" in Peetie's head, inspiring him to microwave the wife voodoo doll after he microwaved his popping corn.

Disliked: Islandgirl's not here yet, so I'll go first. California AGAIN? Where oh where has the imagination gone?

Liked: I liked Home, so I guess it's not too surprising that the gory graphics go in my plus column. I like being creeped out, and Theef had its share of things that would make my momma change the station: 1)the dead grandfather 2)the wife 3)the wife again 4)Peetie's daughter's body (the first time) 5)Peetie's daughter sans head 6)Peetie's daughter sans body.

Disliked: Why oh why didn't the doctor wack Peetie with the stick? Why didn't the daughter do anything? And why was only Scully accompanying doc and daughter to the cabin while Mulder sat in the mansion with the another police officer?

Liked: McMorgue. This is probably just me (hungry?), but I automatically read the M.C. Morgue as a McDonald's special. Is there a "pattern" M&S go through- (Choose California location), McQuestion validity, McWeird Theory, McExamine at McMorgue, Mulder's McRight... So this could turn into being something I dislike- again, the writers point out how TXF could be seen as shallow and formulaic, but they don't bother to point out how it ISN'T. If they can't show support for the arguement, they shouldn't even bring it up.

Not a horrible ep, but not all that great either. Quote of the ep? Definitely NOT "You always keep me guessing." "Stinky is good" perhaps. Next week's ep looks promising. Now that the lines of communication between Scully and CSM have been opened, it looks like they're going to get some real quality time together.
