It ranks number 3 right after Memento Mori and One Breath.

It's funny you mentioned how good DD's acting was in this. This was actually among the first few XF episodes I had ever seen. (It's a season 4 episode) I didn't know much about DD yet and I hadn't developed my humungous crush on him and Mulder yet. I remember aftr seeing this the first time thinking that that guy really ought to get an Emmy nomination for this ep. He was so good. Especially moving was the scene where he was examining the skeleton in the lab to determine if it was Samantha. I agree I wish there had been more meaty eps for DD throughout the years about stuff other than Sam. More eps like Grotesque.

I agree the killer in this was THE creepiest. Interesting that the actor was in Manhunter which was the prequel to Silence of the Lambs which XF was very inspired by. He was sao chling the way he was taunting Mulder.

I didn't put much stock in the nexis aspect of this either. In fact I always forget that part of it. To me it just works great as a straight serial killer and profiler story. Real FBI profilers do have to go deep inside killer's minds. That's scary enough. They didn't really need any paranormal aspect to this.

Look to Demons for a colder side of Teena Mulder. ;-) I just don't like the fact that she obviously knew more about the conspiracy, Samantha and the work her husband did and yet she wouldn't tell her son. Mulder's father was worse for letting him think it was Mulder's fault Sam had been taken. Mrs. Mulder coud have and should have told her son everything she possibly knew about everything. Instead Mulder had to suffer with years of guilt and work bit by bit to try to piece things together. Why didn't Mrs. M confide in him? If she was afraid of her husband Mulder would have protected her. That's why I have problems with Teena.
